"Good," Wesley said. Spike's eyes were very blue in this light. With the music playing loudly in the background, Wesley added, "I love you."

Wesley understood immediately, but thought that Spike wouldn't appreciate sympathy. He tried to think of something helpful to say, and in the end couldn't come up with anything better than, "We've dealt with it very differently, haven't we."

Spike met Wesley's eyes again and gave him a faint smile. "I suppose we have. How's it working for you?"

"Not very well," Wesley said, thinking that if some kind words and the prospect of a happy relationship could cause him to break down, then he was in pretty bad shape. "How about you?"

"I was fine 'til you came along," Spike said, smiling more widely. "You see through it. I'll need some new tricks."

"No," Wesley said. He smiled back up at Spike. "It can be our secret. I'll try not to give you away."

"Thank you." Spike found himself entirely unable to look away from Wesley's eyes, and the smile on his lips would not fade. "I trust you."

Those last three words, simple as they were, made Wesley's heart ache. "I hope you do," he said. "I want you to."

"I do. Like nobody else." The statement felt a bit melodramatic to Spike and also rather revealing, but it was true.

"Good." There was a different song playing now, Wesley thought, and even that realization meant that he was noticing something about the music. That had to be good. "What's this one?" he asked.
