"Good," Wesley said. Spike's eyes were very blue in this light. With the music playing loudly in the background, Wesley added, "I love you."

Apparently 'yes' was not the expected answer, so Spike asked, "How do I talk to you?"

"As if you want to give me everything." Wesley's hand slid underneath Spike's t-shirt -- he just wanted to touch skin. "And god, I love to look at you. I love how fearless you are."

"Most people just say 'stupid,'" Spike said with a smirk, leaning a bit to make it easier for Wesley to get his hand inside his shirt. "But I'll take 'fearless.' Sounds more impressive."

Wesley shook his head. "You aren't stupid. It's clear that you're very intelligent. I think you go to some effort to hide it, though."

"Why would I do that?" It was meant to be a rhetorical question to serve as a non-answer, but Spike realized after he said it that Wesley might just reply. Guess I'm not as smart as you think, he thought to himself.

Spike's skin was cool and smooth against Wesley's fingertips. "I've wondered," he admitted. "Because people will expect less of you? Or because you want to distance yourself from that part of you for some reason?"

Wesley, as always, was too smart for Spike's own good. "Could just be habit," he suggested, as though it weren't a sensitive subject.

"Habit from where?" Wesley asked. He was watching Spike's face carefully, and was aware that he might be treading on less than solid ground. "If you don't want to talk about it, that's all right, love. Just say."
