Spike laughed and nodded, smiling up at Wesley. "I hear you. I wouldn't dream of arguing with you, pet."

"Good," Wesley said. "I intend to have my way over this."

"Works for me," Spike said, leaning up enough to touch his lips to Wesley's.

Wesley moved in to make the kiss less fleeting, tasting Spike's mouth thoroughly before pulling back again. "Is there anything else you need? Tell me. It's important."

Spike was a bit distracted by the kiss, but he managed to reply, "What else could I need? I've got more than I've ever had before."

"That's not an answer," Wesley said.

"Yes, it is," Spike insisted. "I'm happy."

"And you'd tell me if there was something you needed -- or wanted -- that you weren't getting?" Wesley asked.

"If it was a problem." Spike tightened his arms around Wesley with care for his wound. "But I'll be fine if I have you. Ridiculously happy, isn't that what you said?" he said with a grin.

"That's right." Wesley stroked his hand along Spike's shoulder gently.

"Then there's nothing to worry about, is there?" Spike said. "I wouldn't dare stand in the way of what you wanted."

"No, I don't think you would," Wesley said, leaning down to kiss Spike again. "Unless I needed you to."

Spike didn't hear any criticism in that remark, so he smiled and said, "Well, somebody's got to look out for you. Make sure you don't wear white shoes before Easter."

"Prevent me from making any fashion faux pas," Wesley agreed, reminded of something. "Speaking of which, in the confusion over having the glass installed last night, I completely forgot to tell you -- we have our first case."

"Does that segue mean we've got a case about fashion?" Spike asked, his brows drawing together slightly in confusion.

"No, it means that Angel phoned. There were some people here in New York that needed help, so he passed them along to us." Wesley waited to see how Spike would respond to this news.

"Oh." Although Spike didn't feel the immediate rush of anger at Angel's name that he used to, he still had to work a bit to keep his expression neutral. "Good. Nice of him."

"I think he was just as glad to get them off his hands, to be perfectly honest," Wesley said.

"That bad?" Spike asked.

"No... just not the sort of people he likes to deal with. Nervous, requiring a lot of reassurance. And needing translation work done, which, while he wouldn't have handled that part himself, he's not all that comfortable with." Wesley traced a vein in Spike's throat with one fingertip.

Spike shivered slightly at the journey of Wesley's finger. "Sounds like he sent them to the right person, then."

"The right people," Wesley corrected him. "After the translation's done, there's the small matter of finding and retrieving an... well, I suppose one would call it an artifact."

Spike perked up a bit. "Is it all sneaky work, or is there actual violence involved?"

"There's a good chance there'll be violence," Wesley said, smiling at Spike's reaction.

"Well, then, that's..." Spike's enthusiasm waned, and he narrowed his eyes. "Are you up for that?"

"No," Wesley admitted. "Which is why I wouldn't have been able to accept the case without you. I take it you won't mind?"

Spike's growing frown turned into a smile. "Not a bit. I'm always up for shedding some blood. I just don't want you getting hurt."

"I think, difficult as it might be, I'll have to send you off to take care of this one on your own," Wesley said. "Because you're right, I'm not really up to par physically."

"You will be soon," Spike assured him. "And then you'll be right there with me. Though from now on you'd better let me take the knives for you."

"It wasn't the knife that was the problem, it was the person holding it," Wesley said, refusing to let himself react badly to the memory.

Spike raised his eyebrow. "Knives don't kill people; evil demon wizards kill people?"

Wesley nodded. "In any case, the scroll that requires translation ought to arrive by tomorrow, so I'll need to sit down with it for a bit. It shouldn't take long."

There was a brightness in Wesley's eyes when he spoke about the case, and Spike said, "You're excited to get back to work, aren't you?"

It didn't take more than a few seconds' thought to come up with an answer. "Yes, I suppose I am. It's another step. In our life together."

"Is it still striking out on our own if we're getting cases fed to us by Captain Kill-joy?" Spike asked.

"Only when I know that we were doing him a favor by taking the case, and not the other way around," Wesley said. "If you'd heard his voice, you'd know what I mean."

Spike swallowed down his mild but present bitterness at Wesley having heard Angel's voice. "All right. As long as the favors keep going more in that direction than the other."

"I don't have any reason to believe that in a few months we won't have more than enough to keep us busy on our own," Wesley said.

"I trust you. You've done this before, know what needs doing to get us up and running." Spike paused before adding in a lower voice, "Though I still don't think I need business cards."

"It won't hurt to have them," Wesley said, not for the first time. "If you don't use them, that's all right."

"I can just see it - before I rip someone's head off, I can hand them one and say, 'My name's Spike, and I'll be killing you this evening.'" Spike gave Wesley a fond smile, though, as he sighed. "All right. All right. I'll get your sodding business cards. There's no use arguing with you, is there?"

"It's important to me that we're partners in this," Wesley said, lying down with his head on Spike's shoulder. "In everything."

"We are, love," Spike said softly, gently pulling Wesley in against him and settling the covers over him. "The only time we're not partners is when we're playing video games. But the rest of the time it's you and me together."

Wesley smiled faintly, rubbing his cheek against Spike's shoulder. "That's right," he said. "You and me, together."

Spike turned his head just enough to kiss Wesley's forehead, breathing in his comforting scent. "Thank you. For wanting that."
