"It might take her a bit to warm up," Spike agreed, "but it sounds like you've both changed a lot in these past few years. And she's more like you than you think." He hugged Wesley closer. "I think I'd end up the third wheel if she were here."

"I'm sure it will all be fine," Wesley said. "The point is for you to enjoy her visit, not worry about it."

Spike made a noncommittal noise, since it was patently absurd that he wouldn't care about how Wesley was feeling. His heart sank, though, as he contemplated trying to explain his relationships with Wesley and Buffy to Dawn; he was fairly certain she'd have a lot to say on the subject. "I'll have to talk to Buffy first," he said with a sigh.

It actually made Wesley feel better that Spike sounded so reluctant to do that. "You don't want to?" he asked gently.

"No. But at least it'll be over faster than if I were there." And I won't have to see the hurt in her eyes, only hear it in her voice, that I'm not the devoted follower I said I was. Spike slid lower into the water, curling more closely around Wesley. His palms skimmed over Wesley's chest and stomach, carefully avoiding the knife wound.

Wesley didn't reply to that -- just ran his hands along Spike's legs, stroking them in what he hoped was a soothing gesture. "I love you," he said quietly, after a moment.

That statement brought a smile to Spike's lips. "I love you, too," he said with absolute certainty in his voice.
