Spike couldn't possibly believe Wesley, and on some level he would have preferred not even to hear that statement, even if Wesley believed it at that moment, since ultimately it wasn't true. He knew that he had to answer, though, and he didn't want to hurt Wesley by dismissing him entirely, so he finally said, "It's nice of you to say, pet."
